Angela Watkins Rivers: Jesus Tested in the Wilderness – Matthew four:1-11

Jesus wasn’t tempted in the Temple or at His baptism but in the wilderness exactly where He was tired, alone, and hungry, and therefore most vulnerable. Satan typically tempts us exactly where we are vulnerable when we are beneath physical or emotional pressure (for instance, lonely, tired, weighing major choices, faced with uncertainly). But Satan also likes to tempt us by way of our strengths exactly where we are suscepible to pride. We should guard at all instances against his attacks.

Satan’s temptations focused on 3 vital locations: (1) physical desires, (two) possessions and energy, and (three) pride. But Jesus did not give in. Hebrews four:15 says that Jesus was in all points tempted like we are, but with no sin. “He knows firsthand what we are experiencing and he is prepared and capable to enable us in our struggles. When you are tempted, turn to Him for strength.

Angels, like these who ministered to Jesus, have a substantial function as God’s messengers. These spiritual beings have been involved in Jesus like on earth by (1) announcing his birth to Mary, (two) reassuring Joseph, (three) naming Jesus, (four) announcing His birth to the Shepherds, (five) defending Jesus by sending His household to Egypt, (six) ministering to Him in Gethsemane.

Subsequent Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the test. The devil was prepared to give it. Jesus ready for the test by fasting forty days and forty nights. That left Him, of course, in a state of hunger, which the devil took benefit of in the initial test: “Because you are God’s Son, speak the Word that will turn these stones into loaves of bread.

Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It requires far more than bread to remain alive. It requires a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.

For the second test the devil took Him to the Holy City. He sat Him on prime of the Temple and stated, “Because you are God’s Son, jump.” The devil goaded Him by quoting Psalm 91: “He has placed you in the care of angels. They will catch you so that you will not so substantially as stub your toe on a stone.”

Jesus countered with an additional citation from Deuteronomy: “Never dare test the Lord your God.”

For the third test, the devil took Him to the peak of a substantial mountain. He gestured expansively, pointing out all the earth’s kingdoms, how glorious they all have been. Then he stated, they are yours – lock, and barrel. Just go down on your knees and worship me, and they are yours.

Jesus refusal was curt: “Beat it, Satan.” He backed his rebuke his rebuke with a third quotation and only him. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness.

The test was more than. The devil left. And in his spot, angels! Angels came and took care of Jesus desires.

The Spirit led Jesus into the desert. There the devil tempted Him.

Soon after 40 days and 40 nights of going with no consuming, Jesus was hungry.

The tempter came to Him. He stated, “If you are the Son of God inform these stones to turn into bread.

Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man should not reside only on bread. He should also reside by just about every Word that come from the mouth of God. (Deuteronomy eight:three)

Then the devil took Jesus to the Holy City. He had Him stand on the highest point of the Temple.

“If you are the Son of God,” he stated “throw oneself down. It is written, the Lord will command His angels to take fantastic care of you. They will lift you up in their hands. Then you will not trip more than a stone.

Jesus answered him, “It is also written, Do not test the Lord your God.

Lastly, the devil took Jesus to a really higher mountain. He showed Him all the kingdom of the planet and their glory.

“If you bow down and worship me,” he stated, “I will give you all this.”

Jesus stated to him, “Get away from me, satan! It is written, Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one particular you must serve.” (Deuteronomy six:13)

Then the devil left Jesus. Angels came and took care of Him.
