Genesis 38:1-30
Yet another Son of Jacob

Judah, the fourth son of Jacob, was a failure. He failed as a brother by promoting Joseph to Ishmaelite traders. He failed as a son of the covenant by, in disobedience, marrying a Canaanite lady. He evidently failed as a father, because two of his 3 sons had been so evil that God zapped them. He failed as a father-in-law by dodging his duty to Tamar in her widowhood. But from the line of Judah came King David and King Jesus. Have you ever felt that God can not use you for the reason that you are a failure? Soon after the sermon on Sunday, I heard a presentation in life group about an chance to share the gospel in prisons – property to lots of folks who really feel their lives are ruined beyond redemption. Ask God – the identical God who showed such grace and mercy to Judah – for encouragement for any who see themselves as failures.

If you do not recognize with Judah in his disastrous failure, remind your self prior to the Lord that your standing as one particular of His selected folks does not rely on your will or your performs. Lord, safeguard me from arrogant pride. I require your grace and mercy as substantially as Judah did.

Jim Hatcher is thanking God for new missionaries arriving on the harvest field. Please pray for James and Virag Wheeler-Mezei, who will be serving with Higher Europe Mission in Hungary, and Reg and Kim Frank (with their kids), who will be serving in Austria. Consider about the steep understanding curve they face as they commence ministry in a new land and ask the Lord to aid them.
