What Mother Teresa Taught Us…

By Mike Glenn

In my life, I’ve observed a lot of factors. Most of them are quite forgettable, but some are really hard to overlook. One particular of these photos I have in my head comes from an occasion that occurred quite a few years ago. Mother Teresa was in the United States on a speaking tour celebrating her humanitarian perform in India. Through 1 of the dinners, she was speaking and President Bill Clinton was seated to her quick left. Through her remarks, she came to the situation of abortion and with no any warning, turned to President Clinton and told him, in the way only a Catholic nun can inform you, that he had to quit abortion in the United States.

Her actions have been so forceful and her gestures so direct I’m nonetheless shocked the Secret Service agents didn’t take her down.

But no 1 in the space moved. President Clinton was respectful and type. The remarks just after the dinner have been what you would count on. To be positive, there have been some pundits who believed Mother Teresa was inappropriate or more than the line, but most men and women just shrugged and mentioned, “Well, that is just Mother Teresa. She can say what she desires to. She performs with the sick and dying in Calcutta.”

The image was a tiny odd. Mother Teresa is barely 5 feet tall and however, right here she was lecturing the strong guys in the globe. How did she obtain herself in that position?

Effectively, she didn’t get started there. Mother Teresa grew up in modern day Macedonia and chose to grow to be a nun when she was eighteen. Immediately after joining the Sisters of Loretto, she started teaching college in Calcutta. Functioning in the city, she became conscious of the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Leaving her teaching position, she began functioning with the poor. She began an open air college, clinics, hospices and the ministry she’s most recognized for, functioning with dying lepers in the city slums.

As men and women watched her ministry and the adore she shared with these who required her most, she was elevated in the minds and hearts of the men and women in Calcutta. She was named an angel. People today came from about the globe to seek her counsel and have her pray for them. She was recognized as 1 of the most essential men and women in the globe.

Her ministry and perform have been analyzed and studied. Her writings and letters have been published and critiqued. People today have studied her life attempting to obtain out how you make a life that impacts the globe the way hers did. Scholars have written about her leadership style and presented lessons to modern day CEOs about how to get factors completed.

However, for all of our research, we appear to have missed the most essential lesson of her ministry. What’s that lesson? Go exactly where no 1 else desires to go. Do what no 1 else desires to do. Absolutely everyone in Calcutta saw the exact same challenges Mother Teresa did. Absolutely everyone saw the exact same suffering. However, no 1 did something. Far more than that, no 1 wanted to do something. So, when Mother Teresa began performing the ministry no 1 else wanted to do, no 1 opposed her. Prior to any 1 could quit her, Mother Teresa was offered a location on the globe stage. All due to the fact she went exactly where no 1 else wanted to go and did what no 1 else wanted to do.

When Mother Teresa fueled her compassion into action she changed the globe.

What does this have to do with the church in post-modern day North America? Believe about it. The cultural shift in our nation indicates the church is no longer engaging culture from a position of energy. In years previous, politicians would come and speak in nearby pulpits and sought the endorsements of nearby pastors. Now, getting a connection to a faith neighborhood is now observed as a liability. The perform of the church is actively opposed in some communities.

Far more and much more, the North American church is becoming moved to fringes our of our society. Rather of fighting this new reality, Mother Teresa would inform us to embrace it. All through church history, the church has struggled when it was the center of cultural and political energy. Now, the church is no longer welcome in the energy centers of our culture and every person knows it. Do not fight it. Embrace it.

And how do you that? By becoming the great Samaritan. In the story of the great Samaritan, Jesus teaches us our neighbor is the subsequent individual we meet who wants our support. Appear about. My guess, you will see numerous factors that need to have to be completed, really should be completed and could be completed if an individual would just do them.

James tells us we sin when we do not do these factors we know are proper to do. But when we do them, the church can transform the globe. We have prior to. Our history in North America has been beginning hospitals and children’s properties, colleges and shelters for the homeless. There are whole swaths of our population who have been disenfranchised, written off, discarded and ignored. Uncover the chance that is closest to you and engage. Do not be concerned about what to do subsequent. The Spirit will be faithful.

There are homeless in your neighborhood who need to have support. Uncover out their names. Find out their stories.

There are nearby schools who need to have volunteers to teach reading and tutor math. There are homebound in your neighborhoods who are lonely and need to have a take a look at. There are nearby jails that need to have mentors and tutors for the prisoners who’ll quickly be released back into society.

Keep in mind, Jesus will not inform us the second factor to do till we do initially factor. So, do the initially factor and wait for the Spirit to inform you the subsequent step.

Show up. Get to perform. Do what wants to be completed. Who knows? Perhaps you and I can transform the globe just as Mother Teresa did merely due to the fact we have been prepared to go exactly where no else wanted to go and do what no 1 else desires to do.
