“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, mainly because to this you had been referred to as so that you may well inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter three:9
In 1569, Dirk Willems had a challenging selection to make. Willems was arrested by authorities who believed him a heretic and who jailed him in a higher stone tower. More than time he stowed away pieces of cloth till he could make a rope and let himself down the outdoors wall, only to encounter a moat. Given that it was winter, it was thinly iced, and his light frame permitted him to cross. Not so for the armed guard who chased him. The ice gave way, enveloping the weighty man, who cried out to Willems to save him.
He faced a selection. Turn back and aid his enemy, or run for his life? He did not ignore the man’s plea but risked his life to rescue the guard, the identical man who then led him back to the prison. Not lengthy following, Willems died a martyr’s death.
Have you been in a equivalent circumstance? Probably you have been persecuted for your faith or way of life, attacked by loved ones or pals or co-workers. Probably you reside exactly where civil authorities have imprisoned you or your loved ones.
As challenging as it is, can you withhold repaying evil for evil? Will you extend grace and forgiveness toward persons who wound, offend, or assault you?
Later in his letter, Peter says, “Dear pals, do not be shocked at the painful trial you are suffering, as although some thing strange had been taking place to you. But rejoice in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may well be overjoyed when his glory is revealed” (1 Peter four:12-13).
Dear God, your like extends even to your enemies. Enable me grasp that, like Jesus, I am to turn my cheek rather of fighting back. Enable me hold my tongue and speak truth in like when taunted or ridiculed. Enable me participate with Jesus in his suffering so that a single day I may well know your glory. Amen.
