Rahab – The Harlot in the Genealogy of Christ

by Rex Rouis

I like studying folks in the Bible, particularly these that are integrated in the genealogy of Christ. Most of them have been ordinary men and women just like you and me. A single of the terrific items about the Bible is that it tells the sincere story about every person. It describes their strengths and weaknesses, their triumphs and disasters. The Bible, following all, is a book of truth. A single of my favourite characters is Rahab, the harlot (prostitute), of Jericho.

Salmon and Rahab have been the father and mother of Boaz. Boaz and Ruth have been the father and mother of Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse… Matthew 1:five

She is a single of 5 females described in Matthew’s genealogy of Christ they are Tamar the wife of Judah, Rahab the wife of Salmon, Ruth the wife of Boaz, Bathsheba the wife of King David (following becoming the wife of Uriah), and Mary the Mother of Jesus. Other then Mary, Rahab is the only a single described once again in the New Testament.

In James, she is shown as an instance of a person justified by God and declared righteous for placing their faith into action.

You see that a man is justified by functions and not by faith alone. In the identical way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by functions when she received the messengers and sent them out by yet another way? James two:24, 25

You can’t obtain a larger compliment from a God Who is only pleased by the action of faith (Hebrews 11:six). According to Him, possessing faith without having corresponding actions is not pleasing. That sort of faith is inoperative and dead.

So also faith, if it is unaccompanied by obedience, has no life in it – so lengthy as it stands alone. James two:17 Weymouth New Testament

Inside the list of faith champions in Hebrews Chapter Eleven, Rahab is described proper following Moses, and alternatively of Joshua! Let that sink in. The only other lady described on the list is Sarah, Abraham’s wife and mother of Isaac. It is a higher honor to be integrated in this group of believers.

It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the men and women in her city who refused to obey God. For she had offered a friendly welcome to the spies. Hebrews 11:31

She is also the final particular person described in any detail. Immediately after her, the Bible reads:

And what a lot more shall I say? I do not have time to inform about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets… Hebrews 11:32

It was not by likelihood that these spies discovered their way to her residence. God had plans for Rahab from ahead of the starting of time. God sent them there so that she could enable them, and by it, acquire righteousness from God. What was it about her that drew God’s focus, that He would single her out for salvation? Probably He knew that she would stand up for Him and His men and women in courageous obedience. Perhaps God’s not afraid of sturdy females.

Let’s appear at her story:

Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two males as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, particularly Jericho.” So they went and came into the residence of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there. It was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, males from the sons of Israel have come right here tonight to search out the land.” And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the males who have come to you, who have entered your residence, for they have come to search out all the land.” Joshua two:1 – three

The Israelites have been nonetheless camped on the east side of the Jordan River, about 15 miles away from Jericho. But every person in the location knew they have been there and what they have been about to do. News of their earlier victories spread speedily, and men and women from all about would have sought protection inside Jericho’s mighty walls. However for them, this would be the incorrect location to hide.

Joshua sent the spies in, and they ended up at Rahab’s location. She knew what was about to take place and she wanted to be on the Israelite side. Somehow the king of Jericho knew the spies have been there and he sent messengers to ask about it. Why he didn’t go in and ransack her location is a mystery. She need to have accomplished a level of prominence in the city.

But the lady had taken the two males and hidden them, and she stated, “Yes, the males came to me, but I did not know exactly where they have been from. It came about when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the males went out I do not know exactly where the males went. Pursue them speedily, for you will overtake them.” But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. So the males pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords and as quickly as these who have been pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate. Joshua two:four – 7

Rahab lied to the king and told him that they had left earlier ahead of the gates closed for the evening. The king’s males believed Rahab, and they went off browsing for them. But the spies have been protected, for she had hid them on the roof beneath wet and smelly piles of rotting flax. There is no turning back now.

Now ahead of they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, and stated to the males, “I know that the Lord has offered you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away ahead of you.  For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea ahead of you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who have been beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer mainly because of you for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. Now as a result, please swear to me by the Lord, because I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s household, and give me a pledge of truth, and spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who belong to them, and provide our lives from death.” So the males stated to her, “Our life for yours if you do not inform this enterprise of ours and it shall come about when the Lord provides us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” Joshua two:eight – 14

Undoubtedly, some of her traveling shoppers had come to her telling of the exploits of the Israelites and their mighty God. She had heard adequate to make her place her trust in the living God, and she created a life altering profession of faith when she stated, “…the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” She then tends to make the spies swear to spare her and her entire loved ones mainly because of her protection and kindness.

Then she let them down by a rope by means of the window, for her residence was on the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. She stated to them, “Go to the hill nation, so that the pursuers will not take place upon you, and hide yourselves there for 3 days till the pursuers return. Then afterward you might go on your way.” Joshua two:15, 16

She wisely tells them to go out and remain toward the west of the city, in the opposite path of their camp so they can hide in the hill nation. In 3 days they can circle back to the east and safely go dwelling.

The males stated to her, “We shall be cost-free from this oath to you which you have created us swear,  unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window by means of which you let us down, and collect to your self into the residence your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household. It shall come about that any one who goes out of the doors of your residence into the street, his blood shall be on his personal head, and we shall be cost-free but any one who is with you in the residence, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. But if you inform this enterprise of ours, then we shall be cost-free from the oath which you have created us swear.” She stated, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they departed and she tied the scarlet cord in the window. Joshua two:17 – 21

The spies agree to her terms and inform her to leave a red cord hanging from her window to let them know which dwelling to spare. This cord appears reminiscent of the Passover blood that was spread more than the doorways of the Israelite residences back in Egypt when the death angel passed more than them.

They departed and came to the hill nation, and remained there for 3 days till the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had sought them all along the road, but had not discovered them. Then the two males returned and came down from the hill nation and crossed more than and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they associated to him all that had occurred to them. They stated to Joshua, “Surely the Lord has offered all the land into our hands in addition, all the inhabitants of the land have melted away ahead of us.” Joshua two:22 – 24

The spies make it back to camp and relate the entire adventure to Joshua. Apparently, he agrees to spare Rahab and her loved ones mainly because after the city is destroyed, he commands that Rahab and her loved ones be brought out to security.

Joshua stated to the two males who had spied out the land, “Go into the harlot’s residence and bring the lady and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.” So the young males who have been spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outdoors the camp of Israel.  They burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold, and articles of bronze and iron, they place into the treasury of the residence of the Lord. Nonetheless, Rahab the harlot and her father’s household and all she had, Joshua spared and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. Joshua six:22 – 25

Immediately after reading the 1st 5 books of the Bible, the final factor you would have anticipated was God going out of His way to save a pagan prostitute in a city that was about to be utterly destroyed mainly because of sin. Each man, lady, kid, and animal in Jericho was to be killed and burnt. The only factor God permitted to leave was the gold, silver, bronze, iron (for Him), and, Rahab and her loved ones. There would be practically nothing else left, and He was adamant about it. A single poor soul decided to hold a couple of items for himself. That proved to be the finish of him and his entire loved ones (Joshua 7:24, 25).

The final factor you would have anticipated was God going out of His way to save a pagan prostitute in a city that was about to be utterly destroyed mainly because of sin.

Rahab was accepted into the nation of Israel to such an extent that she was capable to marry into the royal loved ones of Judah. She married Salmon, the son of Nahshon. Nahshon was the leader of the tribe of Judah and commanded their army. He was also a close associate of Moses and Joshua, and his sister, Elisheba, was married to Aaron, the 1st higher priest. Rahab’s life is actually a Cinderella story for the ages.

And for the Jewish nation, Rahab came to serve as a effective gentile conversion to Judaism. Her capability to adjust her methods has encouraged numerous generations to seek divine mercy and pardon for their actions and lives. God hates sin, but he loves men and women. He loves all types of men and women, particularly prostitutes. He knows how to save these that like Him and need to serve Him.

Because the Lord did all this, he knows how to rescue godly men and women when they are tested. He also knows how to hold immoral men and women for punishment on the day of judgment. II Peter two:9 God’s Word Translation

This prostitute occurred to be a godly particular person inside, or at least, a godly particular person in the producing. Be confident to like every person and be cautious not to judge. You have no notion what is going on in the hearts of folks. And you do not know how far every single of them has currently come, or how far they are capable to go in God.

“He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” Rahab, the ex-harlot
