You just received a letter from Buckingham Palace. Queen Elizabeth II is coming to America and she desires to take a look at you. Just after you choose your jaw up from the floor, you continue reading. The Queen will be arriving quickly but, for factors of safety, she can’t give you an precise date or time that she will take a look at you. What do you do subsequent? Just after reading the letter once again to be certain you study it appropriately, you appear about your residence. It appears reasonably clean and orderly but, hey, the Queen of England is coming to take a look at. So you get out the mop and broom and start to give your residence a thorough cleaning.
More than two,000 years ago, John the Baptist traveled the Judean wilderness with a message for all inside earshot, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close to!” (Matthew three:two). John was letting the folks know that Jesus, the Son of God, the Word produced flesh, was about to arrive. But John did not know the day or the time at which Jesus would arrive, and so he wanted these to whom he preached to be prepared, to get their homes in order. But John was not speaking about their physical homes, the locations in which they ate and slept. John was speaking about their hearts and their lives. They necessary to repent of their sins and turn their hearts to God. They necessary to do a thorough spiritual cleaning.
The word repent indicates “to transform one’s thoughts and act on that transform.” It does not imply just getting sorry for what you have carried out. It does not imply just expressing regret or remorse more than your sins. These factors are fantastic and important, but what is definitely necessary is a changed thoughts and a changed life. And that transform wants to be evident. In Matthew three:eight, John the Baptist stated, “Prove by the way you reside that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.” In other words, we cannot just appear all neat and clean on the outdoors, we will need to be clean on the inside, as effectively. And the proof of that is in how we reside our lives. We are named to be holy, to reside in accordance with the Spirit and not in accordance with the flesh.
1 Peter 1:14-16 says, “So you will have to reside as God’s obedient youngsters. Do not slip back into your old strategies of living to satisfy your personal desires. You didn’t know any far better then. But now you will have to be holy in anything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You will have to be holy for the reason that I am holy.’” Peter is addressing these of us who have currently received the present of salvation, these of us who have currently accepted Jesus as Savior and have offered our hearts to Him, these who have currently repented and turned our hearts to God. When we entered that life-altering partnership with Jesus, we did our spiritual spring cleaning. Prior to we knew Jesus, we did not know any far better. But now that we know Him, we will have to preserve our residence clean. We will have to be prepared to do our spiritual residence cleaning for the reason that we will have to be holy for Jesus is holy.
