For what does it profit a man to achieve the entire planet and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? (Mark eight:36–37)
This is about possessions. It is about stuff — income, homes, books, personal computer, land, small business. Suppose your heart considers the worth of Jesus and then considers the worth of possessions — the gladness you could have in Jesus versus the gladness you could have in possessions. And suppose your heart is drawn to choose possessions, which is what is taking place to billions of persons.
Suppose your heart is drawn to choose the worth of possessions, and you turn away from Jesus, and you embrace as superior to Jesus all that earthly possessions can give you. And suppose you succeed all your life — practically nothing but accomplishment. And by the finish of your life, suppose you personal almost everything — the planet. Not just Apple, Google, and Mobil Oil, but all of it. It is yours. You contact all the shots. You personal them.
“What does it profit a man to achieve the entire planet and forfeit his soul?”
That is what Jesus envisages right here, ideal? You achieve the entire planet. But then you die, and instantaneously you comprehend it was suicide. It was eternal suicide.
And suppose, facing Jesus, you say, “I’ll give you almost everything. I’ll give you almost everything. I personal it all. I’ll give you almost everything — the entire planet — in return for my soul.”
What do you assume he will say? I assume he will say this: “You would attempt to purchase your soul with the quite possessions that destroyed your soul — the quite possessions that you preferred more than me? Christ-replacing, Christ-belittling idols have no currency in heaven.” And he will turn his face away, and you will perish forever.
What you just attempted to do with your income, that ransom, it is currently been paid — for the several, for the elect of God. The ransom is currently paid, and you preferred not to be a portion of it. You preferred not to be with Jesus. You preferred to make crystal clear that you had been not elect. That is what you meant to do. You are going with the option treasure.
Oh my, do not do that.
That is Mark eight:36–37, and the intention is to clarify how the me and my gospel of verse 35 is additional valuable than items.
Do you really feel freedom welling up in your heart ideal now? I do. I imply, there are temptations nevertheless at 73 with stuff. But I enjoy this text. I will need all the support I can get to be cost-free, cost-free, cost-free from the key idols in the planet: possessions and praise.
