God Dwelling with Man
With its concentrate on rebuilding the residence of the Lord, the book of Haggai would be simple to apply moralistically, particularly in the midst of a church-creating plan. The crucial to applying the book in a gospel-centered way is to see that the temple, like the tabernacle just before it, was the visible symbol of God dwelling in the midst of his individuals, and consequently it foreshadows Christ, the a single in whom the Word became flesh and “tabernacled” in our midst (see John 1:14).

Christ himself is the new temple in the New Testament (John two:19). As his physique, the church is also the new temple (Eph. two:16–22). The message of this book for Christians is therefore not mainly about restoring a creating in Jerusalem, or about constructing a modern creating: Haggai is all about the ongoing perform of creating up the individuals of God, a perform that is mainly God’s (Matt. 16:18), but a perform in which he, by his Spirit, invites us to participate (1 Cor. three:10–17).
